Ubuntu Video - First Impressions

First Impressions of Ubuntu

Okay so people keep telling me how great Linux is and how user friendly it can be for people making the move from Windows. So I decided to give it a try and record the experience for good measure.

In total I’m going to create three videos over the next three days. Today’s video ‘day 1′ looks at the installation process, general navigation and easy of use.

This video is a bit rougher around the edges than my previous one because it wasn’t scripted or planned out. So please forgive me if I waffled too much, lol

Really nice job with this video!
Instead of going in the Package Manager, you simply have to go in Applications > Add/Remove. You may find this easier.

    Hi John,

great video. I found it in a thread of the german Ubuntu-Community (www.ubuntuusers.de) and I think a lot of users (from Windows and Linux as well) will look your videos / first impressions with Ubuntu.

I’m a user of Ubuntu and I enjoy it very much. I’m happy that you want to find some alternative to Windows and I hope that you will be satisfied with Ubuntu.

    :-)

Great video but I would like to reinforce what Justin said. The packet manager is much more complex and harder to use than the add/remove program listed in the application drop down box. the packet manager is generally used for more advanced tasks that require knowledge of the underlying packets needed whereas the add/remove feature lets you browse by name alone and add applications with nothing more than a check box.

yeah, you shouldn’t have cheated. you should have discovered the add/remove menu item under applications.

Very nice video! Keep us updated!
Whenn I installed Ubuntu for the first time I was absolutly supprised about how smooth and fast the installation routine works and that everything you need to work fits on only one CD.

    You have very pleasant voice…

Very good video, pleasant voice :-)
Applications > Add/Remove is for general installing purposes, the Synaptic package manager should only be used for special tasks (if Add/Remove does not work, which is the case when you install “exotic” packages or use a development version - anyway the program will tell you).

I will link to this video in my blog, as it is a good help for anyone understanding just a bit of the English language.

    Greetings from Germany,

I watched all three of your videos and am going to link to your posts from my blog. I think you made a good decision in trying to find analogues instead of equivalents to Windows operations. Almost everything can be done. It’s just often in a different place or uses a slightly different method.

Regarding Add/Remove vs. Synaptic which the other posters have commented on. Add/Remove is at the bottom of the Applications menu, but I still don’t think its use is obvious. The Ubuntu community needs to come up with a short introduction video quickly explaining how to do common tasks. This video should be on the desktop and entitled something easy, like “Introducing your Ubuntu system.”

Best of luck with it. There are plenty of bumps in Ubuntu, but I’m much more satisfied using it at home than I was Windows. The enterprise is a lot more difficult to set up, though. I think Red Hat / Suse have that area tied up pretty well.

    Hi,

    thx for making this video…

I saw that you allow the distribution of your video..

    But you didn’t state a license…
can you confirm that the videos are under a creative license like this:
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/uk/

this would make it easier to make your work more known
